Established in 1979, the Hamad Medical Corporation is the primary tertiary-level healthcare provider in Qatar. It consists of four JCI-accredited hospitals (and 24 primary health care centers), located in and around Doha:

  • The Hamad General Hospital opened in 1982. It has more than 600 beds, five ICUs, eight ORs, an emergency department, and a pharmacy.
  • Qatar’s oldest hospital, the Rumaillah Hospital, was opened in 1957. Renovations (which were completed in 1997) transformed the hospital from a 200-bed general facility to a 300-bed rehabilitation hospital that also offers Plastic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Ophthalmology, Day Care Surgery, and a Stroke Unit.
  • The 334-bed specialty Women’s Hospital was opened in 1988. It sees 1,000 to 1,200 deliveries per month.
  • The Al-Amal Hospital specializes in the treatment of cancer patients; it is operated in collaboration with the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

In recent years, HMC has established a research center and installed a corporate-wide information system. HMC hosts scientific lectures, organizes medical conferences, and regularly invites international experts in healthcare and management. In 2006, Doha hosted the 15th Asian Games. Following completion of the Games, the site was transformed into Hamad Medical City, which incorporates several new healthcare facilities (totally 1,000 beds), staff housing, and staff recreation.
