The ICU service at The King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia has a total of 54 beds; it is divided into four units:
- The 15-bed Surgical Special Care Unit (SSCU-B) treats patients who have undergone major surgical procedures such as: craniotomy; aorto-femoral bypass; and all transplantations (e.g. thoracic, renal, liver, lung, and pancreatic). Cardiology patients may also be treated here if beds are unavailable in the Cardiac ICU.
- The 20-bed central MICU (MICU-C) treats medical and oncology patients. Conditions seen include: patients recovering from cardiac resuscitation, patients with one or more system failures, intubated or mechanically ventilated patients, and patients with CNS instability.
- The seven-bed MSICU-D.
- The 12-bed MICU-E will treat medical and oncology patients. It is currently under renovation, but is scheduled to open in 2009.
There are 12 Consultant Intensivists on staff. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:1. And respiratory therapists provide continuous respiratory support.
1,500 patients (age 14 and up) are admitted annually. Approximately 65% of patients are surgical cases.
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCPC in Internal Medicine and Critical Care, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience as an Intensivist in North America.
