The Department of General Surgery at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia includes nine subspecialty sections: thoracic, breast and endocrine, colorectal, general and minimally invasive, ophthalmology, pediatric, plastic, renal and pancreatic, and peripheral vascular.
The trend across all subspecialties has been to adopt minimally invasive techniques, and new technologies – such as robotic surgery – are being performed.
The Surgical Unit has 34 beds. The department is staffed by 32 Consultant General Surgeons and Associate Consultants, and a total of 4,500 OR cases were performed in 2006.
The Thoracic Surgery section of the Department of Surgery at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia sees diverse thoracic pathology, including tuberculosis, fungus, and Hydatid with parasitic lesions. A Lung Transplant Unit was established in 2003, and three lung transplants were performed in 2006.
Prior to offering a permanent one- or two-year contract, the hospital invites doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to see the hospital, the department, Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia before making a long-term commitment.
Requirements:
- American Boards or Canadian FRCSC in Thoracic Surgery, and
- A minimum of three years post-specialty certification experience as a Thoracic Surgeon in North America.
