The Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant/Hematology/Oncology/Immunology Unit at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia treats infants and children to age 14 years. Nurses in the unit function within a total care nursing system. The unit’s 34 beds are divided into:
- 12 beds for bone marrow transplant patients (the King Faisal Hospital performed 114 stem cell transplants in 2006)
- 12 beds for hematology/oncology patients (the hospital receives approximately 350 to 450 new cases annually)
- 10 beds for immunology patients (such as those with immunodeficiency disorders)
Common conditions include newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients who require induction therapies, and patients with lymphomas, hematological diseases, non-malignant diseases, and solid tumours.
Nurse to patient ratio:
1 : 2 or 4 during day shifts
1 : 2 or 4 during night shifts
Shifts are 12-hours in length and follow the American rotation. Overtime is available.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing, and
- Current nursing (RN) license in Canada or the United States, and
- A minimum of two years current experience as a Registered Nurse, of which at least one must be in the specialty area, working in a mid- to large-sized acute-care hospital in North America.
